Jill Smith has decided it is time to step down from her Partners role. Thank you Jill for fulfilling this important role in a very proactive way for several years. Pat Bruce (07) 4051 3401 has volunteered to be our new Partner Secretary. Please tell Pat if you would like to be asked, sometimes at short notice, to play with our visitors.
The Committee has decided that when a session is scheduled to play Teams, then it will play Teams. You are expected to come to that session as a team of 4. Please ask us well in advance if you need help finding team mates. You can enter as a pair in the events book, but please check ahead of time to make sure you gained team mates. We believe the Friday session will be more flexible in this matter and should play Pairs if there is a half table.
In view of the closeness of the recent bridgemate ballot, the Committee has decided to treat the result as a draw and will show progressive travellers for each hand on alternate months. The travellers will be on view for the rest of May. This decision may be reviewed with experience. You voted overwhelmingly not to show the percentages.
Since March 2011, the Club has had a protocol for using the Bridgemates. You can view it here:
http://www.cairnsbridgeclub.org.au/downloads/bridgemateProtocol.pdf
Note that it requires you to examine the other scores SILENTLY. We also encourage you to enter the contract details and outcome at the end of the hand. At the end of the auction, bridge thoughts (eg deciding what to lead, spreading dummy) are much more important than using the bridgemate. Data entry should wait until the end of the hand.
Coming events include:
GNOT qualifying round. Next weekeend. All day Saturday (BYO lunch) and Sunday morning. Gold Points. Enter in the events book and on the entry form. Teams can be up to 6 players.
Anzac Day 2 session event on Thursday April 25. Red points. BYO Lunch. Play in either or both sessions.
Bridge For Brains. Thursday May 2. This event is in support of Alzheimers Research. The Club will donate the day's table fees. You will have an opportunity to make a personal tax deductible donation.
Zonal Teams. Sunday May 5. Red points. One team will win a subsidy to play in the Queensland Open Teams in Brisbane on August 24-25. Please enter in the book and on the entry form.
Laws Presentation. Sunday May 19. Jan Peach (from QBA) will lead presentations and discussions on bridge laws and directing. This will be of interest to any player with an interest in the Laws. You do not need to be an aspiring director. AM & PM. BYO Lunch. You can tell us in advance what you would like Jan to discuss and questions will be welcome at the sessions. There will be no charge for attending.
Andrew
